STORY OF THE 2019 CHAMPIONSHIP
The season started at Ingliston, where Fraser Anderson got his first full season off to a great start with top spot ahead of some visitors from England, followed by Jack Hall and the diminutive Letisha Conn, from Northern Ireland.
Round two was at Arbroath, and Oliver Hunter took a close victory over Anderson, with Cameron Davidson debuting a brand newly built VW up! to third place.
At Leuchars for round three, Hunter was again setting the pace until the Peugeot transmission failed again, and left Anderson and Davidson to fight it out to first and second places.
In Round 4, at Crail, Hunter was again sidelined with transmission failure, and Davidson took top points ahead of Hall, with Justin Gunning making his debut on the podium.
Kames opened the second half of the season, and Hunter’s transmission held out to give him victory ahead of Davidson, but Star Drive of the day came from Owen Paterson, taking third place on his first ever event.
We joined up with our English friends for round six at Weeton, where torrential rain just before the start made extremely challenging conditions, and it was Lewis Hooper who took top points, but another second place put Davidson in a strong position for the championship . Third place went to Hunter, with a strong performance from Thomas Johnstone following.
And so, to Wales, for our season finale, where the final two rounds would be fought over two events on separate days at Anglesey. Davidson's strong performance throughout the year meant that the Championship title was within his grasp. Hunter was on great form and took maximum points on both days, but his list of retirements in the first half of the season had killed his title hopes. By the end of the first day Davidson had done enough, and he was Scottish Junior Champion 2019 with a round to spare. Hall retired from the first day with a broken transmission, but fought back on the second day, to secure runner-up place in the championship with Hunter third, having won three of the last four rounds.
Thomas Johnstone won the Nissan Cup, and was also top Novice. Letisha Conn won the Irish Cup.
But the year was Davidson's. After missing the first round, he was on the podium for every round thereafter, and even had to drop a podium score when the top six results out of eight were counted for the championship.
